Crafts

Sadly, many of my interests do not lend themselves to pretty pictures. But here are links to some of the more photogenic ones:

Weaving

I recently got into weaving, so here are a few photos of my loom and my efforts. This is a work in progress, I'll add more as I weave more.

Chocolate Feet

A friend of mine has a foot fetish, so I made him a pair of Valrhona chocolate feet for Christmas...and boy, did he turn bright red!

Read the saga here...

Textile Arts

Random photos from a variety of areas, including sewing, quilting, spinning, and knitting. Preliminary photos of the Spiral Shawl.

My knitting chef d'oeuvre...a handspun, handknitted circular shawl that I designed myself. It is 68" across, and fine enough to be drawn through a woman's wedding-ring. This shawl took 15 months from design to completion (!).

Dyeing

I don't have a lot of space in my apartment, so I mostly buy white yarn and then dye it. Here is an account of how I do my dye samples, so I know what happens when I mix colors.

These are really cool. (No, really.) The colored stripes and moire patterns in these socks are achieved using very precise skeining and dyeing techniques. I'm quite pleased with myself for coming up with the idea, and you should really check out the full-size pictures, which look even more (!) interesting than this photo. Each "stripe", you see, is actually two different colors...it looks a bit like a pointillist painting. I call them my Monet socks.

These are among my more artistic creations, Ukranian Easter egg techniques mixed with Celtic knotwork. Come look at the photo gallery...

Marbling Fabric

At the annual Christmas convention of family and friends, we got a little too drunk and decided to marble some fabric for fun. (Okay, we weren't really drunk, but we should have been.) Here are photos and a description of the marbling process.

I make a lot of my handspinning tools. At left is a silver spindle whorl (99.9% silver) that I made out of silver clay, set with blue paua shell cabochons.

Click to take a look at some of my other creations...acrylic whorls, an electric spinner, and a pair of lovely silver spindles an Akha tribal silversmith made for me in Thailand.

Cross-stitch/embroidery is one of my off-and-on hobbies. Because it's essentially paint-by-numbers, I don't consider the results to be my creative work, but it is nevertheless beautiful. Click on the image to see some of my other pieces and unfinished works...

No links here, unfortunately, but I couldn't resist. On the other side of that makeshift balance is more than my weight in Valrhona chocolate, the finest chocolate in the world. Next Thanksgiving, maybe I'll have some chocolatiering photos to share....I make ~30 lbs of truffles, caramels, etc. every holiday season.
